After years of droughts this has come as a surprise and our gardens are taking a hit with the heavy downpours and flooding. To help your lawns and garden survive this, Simple Lawns Newcastle would like to share with you a few important factors in regards to lawn care after heavy rain.
Firstly, is to be patient!
It won’t be beneficial to go straight in with chemicals and machines as soon as the rain stops. Be observant of your lawn and take note of how its coping and reacting to the rainfall. The main issues while it is still raining is leeching and drainage.
Leeching is when the nutrients and elements can be flushed from your lawn, which can make it look pale or yellow. If this is the case then you may need to consider looking at a fertilizer once the lawn is dry to give it a boost of nutrients.
It is also important to keep check of your drainage for your lawn. If there is poor drainage, your turf may remain underwater for several days which is damaging. This is because the lawn can be suffocated. All grass types need air with oxygen and carbon dioxide to grow. When your lawn is flooded, it is unable to draw on the oxygen needed in the soil profile to survive. You could always invest in a regular lawn care package to ensure your yard is expertly looked after.
Once the excess water has dispersed and the ground is drying, you can start to rectify any damage and do the normal yard duties. If the sun starts shining, the growth will increase because of the moisture and rising soil temperature.
Again, you need to be patient because if you start mowing too early and the ground is too muddy, you may ruin more of your lawn as well as getting stuck with the mower in the mud!
