Lawn and Garden Care is so much more than just mowing your lawn every now and then. It is also ensuring you are creating an environment so that your lawn looks healthy and thrives. Weeds can appear in your lawn or garden at any stage and, if left unmanaged, can be incredibly hard to get rid of.
How do they get there?
Weeds can be dropped in your yard from birds, they can get blown in by the wind, the rain may drop or blow seeds in, or collect along the side of driveways. Your furry friend may even collect seeds along your daily walk and then scratch them off in your yard!
Everyone we speak to in the Hunter and Newcastle Region with a lawn knows the frustration of when weeds infiltrate your beautifully cut lawn or even sprout up between your pavers.
Here at Simple Lawns, we wanted to share some tips on how you can tackle weeds in your garden.
- Hot water or steam: Poured directly onto the weed can distort the plants cells and inhibit its growth, eventually dying off
- Mulch: Can not only help your existing plants thrive by providing them moisture but will also deprive weeds of light, never letting them see the light of day!
- Herbicide: The right chemicals can inhibit growth of weeds and is especially effective when used on covered ground like concrete or pavers where the weeds have sprouted up through gaps
- Good old fashioned manual weeding: With the right tools you can extract the weed and all of its roots to ensure it does not grow back
- Drip or Soaker hoses: You can still take care of your prized plants with a drip system whilst depriving weeds of water, which will reduce their seed germination dramatically
- Keep your lawn mown high: Taller grass can shelter the ground underneath, depriving weed seeds from receiving the light from the sun needed for them to germinate
